Genzyme, a biotechnology company founded in 1981 and headquartered in Cambridge, MA, focuses on medical areas with serious, unmet needs where breakthrough therapies and services might significantly improve patients' lives.
Genzyme's research and development efforts today are concentrated on genetic disease, kidney disease, orthopaedics, cardiovascular disease, cancer, immune-mediated disease and transplantation.
The company's leading products are:
Cerezyme (imiglucerase). Cerezyme and its predecessor Ceredase (aglucerase) have been the only enzyme replacement treatment for Type 1 Gaucher disease for over a decade.
Fabrazyme (agalsidase beta). Fabrazyme is an enzyme replacement therapy for Fabry disease, a lysosomal storage disorderthat causes organ complications, heart disease, stroke, and renal disease.
Aldurazyme (laronidase). Aldurazyme is the only approved treatment for mucopolysaccharidosis I (MPS I), an often fatal genetic disease that affects approximately 3,000 to 4,000 people worldwide.
Myozyme (alglucosidase alfa). Myozyme is the first treatment ever approved for Pompe disease and the first for an inherited muscle disorder.
Thymoglobulin (anti-thymocyte globulin [rabbit]). Thymoglobulin is an immunosuppressive polyclonal antibody used in conjunction with immunosuppression to treat acute rejection in renal transplant patients.
Campath (alemtuzumab). Campath is a humanized monoclonal antibody used to treat B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) in patients treated with alkylating agents and who have failed fludarabine therapy.
Clolar (clofarabine). Clolar is used for the treatment of children with refractory or relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common form of pediatric leukemia.
Thyrogen (thyrotropin alfa). Thyrogen is an adjunctive diagnostic used in follow-up screenings of cancer patients with well-differentiated thyroid cancer who have had their thyroid glands removed.
