Johnson & Johnson, a broadbased global manufacturer of healthcare products headquartered in New Brunswick, NJ, is the parent of more than 230 operating companies with two companies, Ortho Biotech and Centocor, leading its biotechnology cluster.
Ortho Biotech and Centocor currently are focusing on new products aimed anemia, cancer and immune-related conditions in the areas of rheumatology, gastroenterology, dermatology and pulmonology.
The two major biologics currently marketed by Johnson & Johnson units are:
Remicade (infliximab). The first biologic of its kind on the market, Remicade blocks the activity of a specific protein identified as an underlying cause of a number of autoimmune diseases, including Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, and plaque psoriasis.
Procrit (Epoetin alfa). A manufactured form of a naturally occurring hormone given as an injection to stimulate the bone marrow's production of red blood cells, Procrit is used to treat anemia associated with cancer chemotherapy for nonmyeloid malignancies; HIV-infected, AZT-treated patients; and chronic kidney disease patients not yet on dialysis. It also is used for anemic patients scheduled for elective, noncardiac, nonvascular surgery.
