Biologic Drug Report - Eli Lilly

Eli Lilly, a global research-based pharmaceutical corporation headquartered in Indianapolis, has made a strong commitment to discover, develop and launch biotech therapies.

Eight drugs in Lilly's portfolio currently are biotech products, and the company in Oct. 2006 completed construction of a new bioproducts pilot manufacturing plant in Indianapolis to help it develop more efficient and dependable manufacturing processes.

The company's leading biologics are:

Forteo (teriparatide). A synthetic form of the natural occurring hormone parathyroid, Foreto is used in treatment of men and women with osteoporosis to form new bone, increase bone mineral density and bone strength, and as a result reduce the risk of bone fractures.

Xigris (drotrecogin alfa). Xigris is used in an effort to reduce mortality in adult patients with severe sepsis (sepsis associated with acute organ dysfunction). Xigris reduces microvascular dysfunction by reducing inflammation and coagulation, and increasing fibrinolysis.
