Biologic Drug Report - Ortho Biotech

Ortho Biotech is headquartered in Bridgewater, NJ, and was established in 1990 as the first biotechnology subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson.

Ortho Biotech currently is conducting late-stage trials of biologic products to treat anemia and cancer. In addition, the company is focusing on new products and research to treat disease and illnesses in the following areas: bone marrow (including anemia), brain, gut, kidney, live, lung, vascular system, musculoskeletal system.

The company's leading products are:

Procrit (Epoetin alfa). A manufactured form of a naturally occurring hormone given as an injection to stimulate the bone marrow's production of red blood cells, Procrit is used to treat anemia associated with cancer chemotherapy for nonmyeloid malignancies; HIV-infected, AZT-treated patients; and chronic kidney disease patients not yet on dialysis. It also is used for anemic patients scheduled for elective, noncardiac, nonvascular surgery.

Doxil (doxorubicin HCI liposome). An advanced form of the anthracycline chemotherapeutic doxorubicin, Doxil is a liposomal formulation (which means that doxorubicin is encapsulated by a thin fatty layer). The liposome is pegylated, which helps protect the drug from the immune system. Doxil is used for treatment of patients with ovarian cancer whose disease has progressed or recurred after platinum-based chemotherapy, and treatment of AIDS-related Kaposi's sarcoma in patients whose disease has progressed on prior combination chemotherapy or in patients intolerant to such therapy.

Leustatin (Cladribine). Leustatin is a synthetic antineoplastic agent that is used as a chemotherapy treatment for a rare form of cancer called hairy cell leukemia.

Orthoclone OKT3 (muromonab-CD3). OKT3 is the world's first therapeutic monoclonal antibody derived from biotechnology and is used to treat rejection of transplanted organs, including the heart, kidneys and liver.
